Old Birthdays

Complaining of a back sorely bent

Raising kids hardly heaven sent
The sweat blood and tears quickly spent
Burning his candle from both ends

The irony not lost at all
As "SURPRISE" echoes off the wall
The layer cake looking awfully small
Under candle-flames bonfire tall

As Nan starts his birthday serenade
Gramps turns down his hearing aid
Doesn't disguise the Toot he's made
Or the smile spreading across his face
