August 2010 Winner - An "A" Party

by Halde Pottinger
(Inverness, Scotland)

Our boy is named Archie...he is such good craic! And, for his 2nd birthday we had an "A" party!

What is an "A" party I hear you shout!

Well, because Archie starts with "A" we had an "A" party. Obviously if your child is called Charlie, you have a "C" part, Sarah you have an "S" party and so on.

The idea is you invite as many people as you want and everyone has to dress up as something beginning with your letter! It is so much fun, get's people thinking and makes birthday boy/girl feel that extra bit special!

We had ALL sorts coming to our "A" party. We had Aardvarks, Ants, Apples, Acrobats and we had a few adults coming as Anthony Worrel Thomson, Ant from Ant and Dec, Aretha Franklin and an Architect! It is fun too trying to guess what everyone is!

It was great fun and if you choose to have a party like our "A" party, you will have so much fun...and let me know how it goes!!

Down on the Farm Kids Birthday Party

by Holly
(North Carolina)

When my son was little we won an auction at church to have a birthday party at a working farm. It was so much fun! I bought leftover plastic eggs from Easter and we filled them with little treats and gave them out as goodie baskets to the kids to take home. I encouraged the kids to wear their farm attire, and most showed up in straw hats, plaid shirts or overalls! I cut a large pig out of cardboard and they played pin the tail on the pig, got a change to ride a horse (with an adult leading it around) and went on a hay ride and tractor surfing! It was a huge hit!

Around the World Theme

by Tracey
(Hermanus)

SA Flag in jelly!

SA Flag in jelly!

My son's 7th birthday was an "around the world theme".

We ate hotdogs (USA), homemade pizza (Italy), and jelly made to look like the South African flag (our home country) with ice cream.

The kids were asked to come dressed in the clothing of another country (although some forgot), and before the party we made lots of paper flags of different countries.

Games: We played a version of shipwreck, using flags to designate the countries on 4 corners of the garden.

We had a chopstick - and-marshmallow relay race (China/Japan) which was hilarious and great fun! (divide the kids into 2 teams and they take turns to run to the opposite side, collect a marshmallow on their chopsticks and take it back to their team. First team to collect all their marshmallows wins, and they get bonus mallows for winning. The losing team still gets to eat their own mallows).

We also had a pinata (Mexico), which was a highlight, as we have never had one before, but a word of warning: don't get too over enthusiastic with your layers!! Ours had too many and took AGES to break!!)

All in all, it was a great party as a lot of the prep could be done ahead of time (pinata, making flags) and the food was really easy.

As for the cake, well, I kept it really simple and made a number 7 cake, which is what he wanted! (Whew!)

Pony Party

by naomi burton
(hampshire, uk)

My daughter loves ponies... like most 5 year old girls she would love to have her own pony to ride and care for, but unfortunatly this is not a possibility!
For her 6th birthday party next month I have arranged for her to have a "pony party!"

We have invited friends and family and besides the normal party things - pony cake, pony balloons, pony tablewear etc.. I have arranged for my sister to bring a special guest - her miniture shetland pony to our garden party!

We dont have a huge garden but it is big enough for the children to take turns and be walked around the garden and also they can have fun plaiting his mane and tail and brushing him!

I cannot wait to see my little girls face when a pony turns up to her party!
Unfortunatly no pics as not happened yet.

I've never come across this idea before, so cool. Your daughters a lucky lady! Would love a picture if you have time afterwards.
Party Delights do some really cute pony party stuff if you haven't already got some.
Thanks for your great idea and hope you all have an amazing party!

pyjama pamper party

by carol oneill

This year my daughter who will be 7 early september is having a pyjama pamper party. We are having nails decorated and face paints , a special princess and the pea game ( which involves sitting on 3 pillows to find which one has the pea or tennis ball in our case).Pin the kiss on the frog and movies and popcorn.

All guests are arriving in their best P'Js and will be leaving with a special spa style gift bag which includes bath bomb flower sponge nail file and candy necklace and lipstick!.

My daughter cant wait and we have made loads of the decorations ourselves which has been great fun. She has never been to a party like this so will be a bit unusual I am hoping a break from the norm .
Sorry have no pictures yet as its at the early part of sept!

Half and Half Party for Twins

by Kirstie
(Chester)

I have 3yr old boy/girl twins, so instead of sticking to just one theme we decided to have a half and half party.
One side of the table was a cowboy theme, the other was fairy princess. Even the cake was in two parts with one side being being green with cowboys on top and the other pink with a princess on. What was more fun, when it comes to party games..it was cowboys against princesses. (as the children came in fancy dress)

We had to have 2 circles when it came to pass the parcel, because a little cowboy getting a Snow White hair slide..well he wouldn't of been happy.
It was a great hit, and perfect for all. Not too girly, and not too boyish.

Thanks Kirstie, two great kids birthday party themes in one go! Great idea.

Sophie

Knights and Castles

by Lys Black
(Marple , Cheshire. UK)

We decorated our local hall with hanging banners(Hogwarts themed as previously used for a Harry potter Party). They were made by me out of satin fabric appliqued(with bondaweb) and one was a coat of arms made specifically for my son with his pets as bearers.

Also we had a Papier Mache Knight , Life size (see Sir Henry Percy on Facebook-He has his own page and has been to lots of parties)We made him from tubes from a carpet shop held together with bolts(you can buy bolts with out ends in very long sizes from hardwear shops) with strong cardboard and layers of paper mache.

We had fold up tables end to end like bench tables covered in gold and silver paper table cloths and gold paper plates and silver looking foil chargers. We had silver goblets bought for peanuts from charity shops and polystyrene clear wine goblets with plastic jewels stuck on.

The children all dressed up and we had extra bits just in case in a dressup box by the door.My friend brought a cornet to play a fanfare for the party king who wore a crown and cloak. The cornet was a useful attention-getter as this was a rowdy party.

We had a tourney and the knights jousted with pipe lagging tubes on imaginary horses a la monty python. There were the usual party games but I hid in the kitchen serving food and relied on the mothers with crowd control skills to do that bit. There were about 25 children and they had a really good time. Percy was slightly wounded and has almost as much silver gaffer tape as paint but the children just had loads of fun.

We have had loads of themed parties as I like making stuff and this was the best. We save our stuff. A paper mache boar and bears head from a school play, came out for this as well as halloween And our Harry Potter themed Paintings in gold frames have also done the rounds.

We had to make our own music tape. Fortunately Spamalot had recently been released . Any enterprising ladies out there who could make compilation albums for themed parties? If you hate twee It is difficult to get the right music ready made.
