I lurve the cat in the hat - he's got to be the coolest birthday cat around!

I would have adored having a cat in the hat themed birthday party when I was a kid, so when Bronwen asked me about her daughter's cat in the hat birthday party, I was happy to help...

I got all excited, and my mind started getting creative....

Here's what I came up with...

Plan your Cat in the Hat Party

Send out your cat in the hat invitations

The first stage in planning your party is to send out the invitations, usually about a month before.

I got a bit carried away with this one and designed some FREE cat in a hat invitations for you to download, print and send.

I hope you like them!

Plan a Special Cat in the Hat Happy Birthday Greeting

What could be better for any young 'kitten in a hat' than to have a special birthday greeting from the cat in the hat himself...

Watch their eyes light up, when you show them this fun Happy Birthday greeting video - that I created specially for you.

Start your own little kitten's special birthday morning off with a video from our very own cat in a hat, himself - or save it as a surprise Happy Birthday message in front of all the party guests.

You can watch on a computer screen, link up to your TV, or view on a mobile phone.

Plan your Cat in the Hat Party Decor

The obvious color theme for your party is red and white. Decorate the venue with red and white balloons, decorations and Dr Seuss party ideas.

Ask all the guests to wear red and white or come dressed as a Dr Seuss character. You will have fun guessing who will choose which character to dress as, and planning your own costume.

You can make or even buy a Dr.Seuss Cat In The Hat Costume

If you would like your guests to come dressed up, make sure you give them plenty of time to plan and make their costumes - so send your cat in the hat invitations out well in advance.

Plan your Cat in the Hat Party Food

The center piece for the table can be a large Dr Seuss Hat!

You can make:

  • Red and white cat in the hat cupcakes
  • A hat shaped, stripy birthday cake - it shouldn't be too difficult to make - just layer it up and add colored icing to each layer
  • ...and of course you can't miss out the famous 'Green Eggs and Ham'!

Other red and white cat in the hat party food

  • Red and white jelly beans
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Mozzarella Balls
  • Strawberries and ice cream

More cat in the hat party food ideas...

  • Make a green punch with Kiwi juice and sprite
  • Make a red punch with strawberry juice
  • Fill a goldfish bowl with cheesy puffs

Cat in the Hat Party Games

No cat in the hat Dr Seuss birthday party is complete without some good, old-fashioned fun and games - of the kind the cat would definitely approve of, of course....

Here are some I came up with...

  • Pin the hat on the cat - blindfold your party guests and get them to pin a hat, cut from card, onto a hat-less cat, drawn on a large piece of paper, or card. (Remember to put your cat drawing somewhere you won't mind getting 'pinned' - the back of a door, perhaps? Or put thick corrugated card beneath to protect your walls. Or go for the pin-free option, with some blu-tack, or sticky tape.)
  • Musical hats, to Dr Seuss music of course!
  • Pass the hat - fill the hat with goodies and the child gets to 'dip in' when the music stops

Cat in the Hat Party Favors

For the party favors I would give each child a Cat in the Hat Book, for those who haven't yet discovered Dr Seuss!

And bag it up with a slice of your cat in the hat cake, in these great little cat in the hat goody bags

Your Cat in the Hat Poem

Don't forget your cat in the hat poem...

Did you watch our very own cat in a hat perform the poem, earlier in the page? - watch again, now

Here is the cat in the hat poem for you to use - you can read it out to your child, write it in their birthday card - or display it at your cat in the hat birthday party...

Cat in the Hat Poem

What a great day! What a super great day!
What a super great day for your birthday!
There's sweet cake you can eat
And sweet gifts that are neat
So what a great day! What a super great day!
It's a super great day for your birthday!

And sure you could celebrate your super great day
And have some fun in a super great way
But whatever you do, do whatever you want to
Because it's your great day! It's your super great day!
It's your super great day for your birthday!

So what could you do? What could you do that you want to?
You could drive a canoe while you sing toodle-loo
Or maybe bake cookies in the shape of a shoe
Or find some gum that you can go out and chew
But whatever you do, just don't make yourself blue
Because a sad birthday is a birthday that's not very true.

Birthdays should be like all the stars in the sky
They twinkle, they winkle, and no one knows why
But there every night there they are just the same
And if you listen carefully, very carefully,
your birthday even knows your own name

So go have a great day! Go have a super great day!
And just be thankful that a super great birthday
decided to come your super great way
Because without a birthday you just wouldn't be the same
It'd be like being you but being you with a different name.
And if you ask me that would just be pretty lame.

This is a poem that has been written especially for this website. It is free for you to use for your own personal use, at your own child's birthday party.

I hope some of these ideas help you with your cat in the hat birthday party planning.

Good luck - and enjoy the party.

I think it sounds great fun - I wish I could be there. Do let me know how you get on - and which bits your party guests enjoyed most.
